SUMMARY:Bottle Drive
LOCATION:City Works Yard at 901 First Street
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the bottle drive is based out the City Works Yard at 901 First Street.\n \nDate: Saturday\, January 4\, 2025\nTime: 10:00 AM start\, 3:00 PM end.\nStarting Place: City Works Yard at 901 First Street\, just a block west of Royal Centre Mall (Safeway)\nEnding places: City Works Yard.\n \nCity Works yard:\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/City+of+New+Westminster+Engineering+Operations/@49.2219413\,-122.9174555\,79m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x548677e3982dab07:0xee59c1b90d660366!2sCity+of+New+Westminster+Engineering+Operations!8m2!3d49.2223405!4d-122.917588!3m4!1s0x548677e3982dab07:0xee59c1b90d660366!8m2!3d49.2223405!4d-122.917588 (https://www.google.com/maps/place/City+of+New+Westminster+Engineering+Operations/@49.2219413\,-122.9174555\,79m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x548677e3982dab07:0xee59c1b90d660366!2sCity+of+New+Westminster+Engineering+Operations!8m2!3d49.2223405!4d-122.917588!3m4!1s0x548677e3982dab07:0xee59c1b90d660366!8m2!3d49.2223405!4d-122.917588)\n \nA warm lunch of hot dogs and hot chocolate will be provided by the Group at the City Works Yard. \n \nYouth should be wearing their full uniforms. \n \nWe would like parents to remain and participate by taking their kids out on the routes rather than just dropping them off. You are welcome to join us for the entire time or for the time you have available. If you are able to bring a vehicle suitable for collecting returnable bottles and cans (a pickup is perfect) then that will help us out a lot.\n \nWe are planning to cover these neighbourhoods: Kelvin North\, Glenbrooke North\, and Massey/Victory Heights and some of Sapperton. Maybe more if we have the energy.\n \nTypically\, a vehicle will pick one of the ~50 routes and take a few parents/kids and drive the route. The kids must knock on every door and say what they are doing and what they are collecting for (fundraising for the 12th New Westminster Scout Group to send kids to camp).\n \nWhen the vehicle is full\, take it back to the Works Yard to unload. Then go out and do another route or finish your route. Repeat until done.\n \nNote that we need to follow the two Scouter rule - i.e. two adults with youth at all times.\n \nThis year\, we don't need to sort the bottles and cans - simply put them in the large bins. This will allow more time for collecting and less time spent sorting.\n\nFor more details on this ScoutsTracker event\, go to\nhttps://scoutstracker.ca/venturers/view?event=2-3316-22883688498016-df01a549fc9c87f1b237

SUMMARY:Rovent (Social Camp)
LOCATION:Cambie Creek Manning Park\; 49.110180669292944\, -120.84287255491714
DESCRIPTION:Rovent (https://rovent.ca) is a Venturer/Rover/Guiding social camp held on the Family Day weekend at the Cambie Creek winter group campground in Manning Park. Social camps are camps for senior Scouting &amp\; Guiding sections planned by other Rovers and Venturers.\n\n=== ===\n\n=== CAMP FEE ===\nThe Venturers have decided to set the fee at $85. This will cover their camp registration fee ($45)\, a portion of the registration fee for the Scouters ($35)\, and some amount of the food. The remainder will be covered out of the Company budget allocated to us by the grroup.\n \nPayment link: \n\n=== PERSONAL CAMPING GEAR ===\nAs with any other camp\, Venturers are responsible for their own personal camping gear. We will be using group tents\, shelters\, cooking equipment\, etc. Because this is an extended winter camp in a remote location\, there are several special considerations with respect to personal equipment. The weather forecast (https://www.theweathernetwork.com/en/city/ca/british-columbia/manning-park/7-days) is currently calling for overnight lows between -2&ordm\;C and -10&ordm\;C. \n \nBoth the group wiki (https://wiki.newwestscouts.ca/index.php/Basic_Scout_Packing_List#Winter_Additions) and the Rovent website (https://www.rovent.ca/?page_id=1173) have sample packing lists for a winter camp. There's a good quote on the Rovent website: "If you don't have the right gear bring lots of the wrong gear. By that we mean\, if you don't have a crazy awesome gore-tex jacket and snow pants\, bring 2 sets and alternate wearing them. this applies to almost anything you bring."\n \nThe camp organizers have posted their "Cold Talk" video as well: https://youtu.be/l4bvKyzhqkM?si=N1H9PQm984iXyRtm (https://youtu.be/l4bvKyzhqkM?si=N1H9PQm984iXyRtm)\n \nMy big addition is to not bring jeans. I have seen jeans freeze and shatter\, and they soak up water like a sponge.\n \nThe group has many spare sleeping bags and we'll be bringing them to camp. If you don't have a "proper" winter bag\, layering two or even three three-season ones works well. \n \nWe have some extra winter gear that is available if anyone requires\, and if not claimed they'll be coming with me as spares anyway:\n* -9&ordm\; C synthetic mummy sleeping bag\n* 1x winter boots size M10\n* 1x winter boots size M11\n \nOther things that often get overlooked:\n* sunglasses\n* chap stick\n* dedicated sleeping clothes and toque (doesn't leave the tent!)\n* water bottle - in winter you can get dehydrated quite easily and not realize it. If you have a genuine Nalgene bottle\, these can be filled with hot water and put inside the sleeping bag before bed. Don't try this with a knock-off or a single-wall metal bottle.\n \nIf you have any questions or concerns about gear\, let me know.\n\n=== TRAILER PACKING AND SHOPPING ===\nWe will be meeting at the storage locker (94 Braid Street) on Thursday\, February 12 at 7pm to gather gear\, and then from there moving to the Superstore on Lougheed for shopping. \n\n=== CAMP TRANSPORTATION PLAN ===\nWe plan on leaving around 10:00 in order to get to camp before it gets too dark. We will meet at (meeting point) and depart from there. We will likely stop along the way for a fuel and food break\, so either bring something to eat or bring money for the traditional Burger King stop. We have a dinner planned for Friday night but setup always takes a lot longer in the winter so it may be a later meal.\n \nCamp ends on Monday morning. Exact departure time is still TBD but is likely 10:00.\n\n=== EMERGENCY INFORMATION ===\nThere is no cell signal at the camp site. Mike will have a Garmin satellite messaging device for emergency use\; this device can send and receive SMS text messages. Messages can be sent through: https://share.garmin.com/share/9O5XO (https://share.garmin.com/share/9O5XO)\, access code: HikeMike\n \nBoth myself and Scouter Graham are first-aid certified. The camp also provides advanced first aiders on-site\, along with a warming tent.\n\nFor more details on this ScoutsTracker event\, go to\nhttps://scoutstracker.ca/venturers/view?event=2-3316-11428629013568-d112bce7954be055be91

If you have a&nbsp\;<strong>genuine</strong> Nalgene bottle\, these can be filled with hot water and put inside the sleeping bag before bed. <strong>Don't try this with a knock-off or a single-wall metal bottle</strong>.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>If you have any questions or concerns about gear\, let me know.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<h1>TRAILER PACKING AND SHOPPING</h1>\n<p>We will be meeting at the storage locker (94 Braid Street) on Thursday\, February 12 at 7pm to gather gear\, and then from there moving to the Superstore on Lougheed for shopping.&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<h1><strong>CAMP TRANSPORTATION PLAN</strong></h1>\n<p>We plan on leaving around&nbsp\;10:00 in order to get to camp before it gets too dark. We will meet at&nbsp\;(meeting point) and depart from there. We will likely stop along the way for a fuel and food break\, so either bring something to eat or bring money for the traditional Burger King stop. We have a dinner planned for Friday night but setup always takes a lot longer in the winter so it may be a later meal.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Camp ends on Monday morning. Exact departure time is still TBD but is likely&nbsp\;10:00.</p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<h1><strong>EMERGENCY INFORMATION</strong></h1>\n<p>There is <strong>no cell signal at the camp site</strong>. <span style="font-weight: 400\;">Mike will have a Garmin satellite messaging device for emergency use\; this device can send and receive SMS text messages. Messages can be sent through: </span><a href="https://share.garmin.com/share/9O5XO"><span style="font-weight: 400\;">https://share.garmin.com/share/9O5XO</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400\;">\, access code: HikeMike</span></p>\n<p>&nbsp\;</p>\n<p>Both myself and Scouter Graham are first-aid certified. The camp also provides advanced first aiders on-site\, along with a warming tent.</p><br/><br/>For more details on this ScoutsTracker event\, go to <a href="https://scoutstracker.ca/venturers/view?event=2-3316-11428629013568-d112bce7954be055be91">https://scoutstracker.ca/venturers/view?event=2-3316-11428629013568-d112bce7954be055be91</a>

Venturers advised to bring it filled if they want to use the wall.\n \n2025-11-05 added note: Also not on vents roster\, but active rover Sophia Killawee also decided to be in attendance.
